From Tocqueville to The Beach, the change of direction taken after the New Year's Eve tragedy

After the Crans-Montana massacre and the debate over the safety of Milan's nightlife, LED lights are arriving in nightclubs to replace the fireworks displays, the same ones that caused the fire at "Le Constellation."

This change of direction comes alongside an appeal from the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, who a few days ago called on nightclub owners to stop using the usual "sparkles": "a moment of spectacle is not worth the risk of tragedy," he said. His intervention follows that of Milan Mayor Beppe Sala, who called for greater controls on the city's nightlife.

Jacopo Forzato, partner of The Beach nightclub in Milan, explains that this is a final decision made by the club: "Yes, it's official." But The Beach isn't the only club to have adopted this solution. Tocqueville, a historic Milanese nightlife hotspot, has also abandoned traditional candles. "We introduced these LEDs before New Year's Eve, now they're permanent," explains one of the club's promoters.

Alongside LEDs, other "luminous" solutions are also emerging. A promoter who has worked for Gate Milano for years explains: "The traditional candles have been replaced by a sort of luminous plate positioned on the bottom of the bottles." A choice that, he admits, "won't be as dramatic as real flames, but it's an excellent alternative."
